Family Involvement and the Importance of Community

A child is raised not only by a family, but by a community that knows them, encourages them, and walks beside them as they grow.

Henrieka Farm Center has never been intended to be a place where children are simply dropped off for a few hours each week. We are building something much deeper—a community of families who believe children thrive when they are known, when they are trusted with meaningful work, and when the important adults in their lives work together.

The relationships built here extend beyond the children. We hope families come to know one another, celebrate together, share meals together, and find encouragement in one another as we all learn to raise capable, kind, and responsible young people.

The seasonal gatherings, shared stories, muddy boots, campfires, and conversations around the picnic table are not extras to the program. They are part of the education.

Community is not something we hope happens.

It is something we intentionally cultivate.

Seasonal Gatherings

Four times each year our entire community gathers to mark the changing seasons:

• Autumn Equinox

• Winter Solstice

• Spring Equinox

• Summer Solstice & Bridging Ceremony

These gatherings are an important part of the rhythm of Henrieka Farm Center. They provide opportunities for children to share their Seasonal Offerings, celebrate what they have learned, reflect on the passing season, and strengthen relationships between families.

Whenever possible, we ask every family to plan to attend all four gatherings. Your presence communicates to your child that their learning matters and that they are part of something larger than themselves.

These evenings are among the traditions that children remember long after the school year has ended.

Sharing Your Gifts

Every family brings unique experiences, talents, traditions, and interests to our community.

Each family is asked to spend at least one class session with us during the school year.

You might:

• Read a favorite picture book.

• Share a hobby or craft.

• Teach a practical skill.

• Lead a nature activity.

• Demonstrate a musical instrument.

• Share your profession or military experience.

• Introduce a family tradition.

• Cook a favorite recipe.

• Simply spend the morning exploring the farm alongside the children.

Whenever possible, we encourage parents to remain for the entire class session.

Doing so allows your child to see the important adults in their life learning together and gives you the opportunity to experience the rhythms of Farm School firsthand.

You do not need to be an expert.

You simply need to be willing to share something you love.

Our Open Door

Families are always welcome at Henrieka Farm Center.

Whether you visit for a scheduled volunteer day, a celebration, or simply wish to spend time observing the learning community, we believe that openness builds trust and strengthens relationships.

When visiting, we ask adults to support the teachers by embracing our philosophy of being present without taking over.

Children grow tremendously when they know a trusted adult is nearby while also being given the space to solve problems, build friendships, and develop independence.

Celebrations

Birthdays and milestones are joyful opportunities to celebrate each child as a valued member of our community.

Families are welcome to provide a simple treat for the class if they wish.

We especially encourage bringing a favorite family picture book to share. Stories often become some of the most meaningful birthday gifts we can give one another.

*If your family does not engage in celebration, we respect your choices and tactfully take the time to help your child enjoy a different experience while the celebration is occurring- always being sure not to ostracize or emphasize differences in anything but a respectful and thoughtful way.

We Grow Together

The children are not the only learners at Henrieka Farm Center.

As teachers, parents, grandparents, siblings, volunteers, and friends, we are all continually learning alongside one another.

The community our children experience is the community they will one day help create in the world beyond the farm.

By choosing to participate fully—to attend gatherings, share your gifts, volunteer your time, and build relationships—you help create something that no curriculum or classroom could provide.

Together, we are raising children who know how to work hard, care deeply, serve generously, and find joy in living in this world, with this world, and with one another.
